Velma D. Lowery Hansen, 90, of Spirit Lake, formerly of Edmonds, Washington, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake. Iowa. She was born on November 22, 1917, in Alvoid, Texas, to Gurley Hampton Lowrey and Alice Nettie Magers. Velma was united in marriage to James Harding Hansen on December 24, 1939 in DeQueen, Arkansas. James passed away on December 24, 2003.
Velma went back to further her education at the age of 50, graduating with her A.A. Degree. She worked for over twenty years as a swim instructor for various Y.M.C.A.'s. Velma enjoyed spending her spare time gardening, scuba diving, hunting, watching the Seattle Mariners play baseball and listening to music. She had a true love for all animals. Velma was a member of the Toastmasters and the Church of God in Seattle.
Velma is survived by her two daughters, Sylvia Sasse and her husband, Al, of Altus, Oklahoma and Diane Lockard and her husband, Ken, of Spirit Lake; son, James Hansen and his wife, Diana, of Seattle, Washington; brother, Verneil Lowery of Spokane, Washington; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters; and a brother.
Velma's final resting place will be DeQueen, Arkansas, at a later date.
